Here comes Summer …
Well, fingers crossed!
But if the sun does come out, the heat and humidity can be a real hazard , even life threatening to our dogs – here are some pointers to help keep them alive, comfortable and healthy –
- Playing and walks should be in the early morning or the cool of the evening, and never within an hour or two of eating, depending on the amount and type of food, and the individual dog.
- Ideally , only feed light, easily digested food, once your dog is cool again and rested, 1 hour or more after the evening walk, so that digestion can take place during the cool of the night.
- Large, deep chested dogs are especially at risk of Bloat , a rapidly fatal swelling and twisting of the stomach , which is more likely to happen if fed then exercised in hot weather
- Always ensure plenty of clean fresh water is available, whether in the house, garden or travelling
- You
should never
leave a dog alone in a vehicle. But if you do remember shade can disappear as the sun moves
around or what was cloudy becomes a clear, bright and hot sky at
which point your car becomes a greenhouse. If you do NOT allow adequate cooling a car can
quickly become an oven and kill your dog from heatstroke - Be especially careful with dogs which are old, overweight, have heart or lung problems , thick coats or short noses ( pugs, pekes etc ) as these are even more prone to overheating
- Humidity is especially dangerous to dogs as they can only cool down by panting, and if the air is already saturated , this will not work
If you are at all concerned about your dog’s health , please make an appointment to see Sue, who will be happy to discuss your concerns in depth. |
