The chip is implanted with a harmless and usually painless injection between the shoulder blades.  The chip contains a unique code number that is held in a database shared by all the chip companies for the lifetime of your pet.   The database stores all you contact details as well as any important information about your pet.  To read the details an inert scanner is passed over the dog and when the chip is located it can take just 0.04 seconds to read the code number, the chip then returns immediately to its inactive state.
